If You're Reading This, I Quit TikTok
so yesterday, i decided that it was for the better that i quit tiktok. i also plugged all my socials beforehand, so chances are you're probably here from that post. i wanted to give a more in-depth explanation here. it's kinda objective, a little subjective, and personal all at once.
firstly, the platform's moderation has begun to take obvious side with bigotry. while their guidelines will claim hate speech is against the rules, reporting it rarely gets you anywhere unless it's mass reported. however, if you respond to said content, you will be reprimanded for it. months back, i recieved a comment telling me to take my own life over a comedic post about soup. i reported the comment and it remained there, but when i told the person directly in their messages that what they did was not okay and blocked them, i lost my message privileges. additionally, i was unable to report someones username for having a racial slur and thread of assault in it, but tiktok removed my post for calling attention to it. most recently, tiktok's ceo signed a deal for oracle to have control over what content american users will be able to see and interact with. i dont want for my feed to be filled with propaganda and misinformation, and considering how much of it has been unlearned by the masses thanks to social media, this was definitely part of the intent behind the deal.
second, as i also stated in my post about leaving, the platform's community largely sucks as of recent. i've gained a decent platform on there, and the community i had is relatively awesome. but thats really only on my page, and maybe the friends tab. every other post is just negativity, bullying, and needless hate. you breathe wrong on there and get sent hundreds of death threats for it. people dont understand that they can always scroll from or block the people they dont want to enagae with- part of the appeal of the internet is curating your own feed. the problem with tiktok's overall format of being able to endlessly see content based on content you previously interacted with is that the people who disagree with or hate on that stuff are using the same tags, and you're bound to see the other side of it too. even though the platform allows you to block others, tiktok users are weirdly averse to it. granted, the platform has a limit for how many people you can have blocked at once, but even without it people act like using the block button for its intended purpose is a crime against humanity itself. i dont think they understand that the internet is not a real, physical space, and people are in fact allowed to limit communication with you however they see fit. people want any reason to attack others, will get mad if you prevent it by blocking others, and find any reason to make you out to be the one in the wrong for it. in conclusion, the community is toxic, hateful, and has no concept of boundaries.
if you go to my page right now, youll see that it's private- i did this for a two major reasons. the first being that a lot of the time, people like to take what you say out of context to make you seem worse, and i dont want anyone doing that while im not around to defend myself. the second is that i did tell people where to find me if they want to continue engaging with my content- and i have an ex friend who unfortunately stalks me online. while i already have him blocked on the platforms we share, and can assume he knows some of my socials (youtube, discord, and maybe my tumblr), i know that since then i have made accounts on platforms that he does not know of, such as here and strawpage, meaning i could vent about how that situation made me feel without him keeping tabs on me. you dont have to be worried about how this affects me, ive known about this for a year and by this point it feels more annoying than a threat. he isnt doing this to get one over on me or get important info on me, he's doing this to talk shit about me. i want to make it clear that him stalking me had little to do with my decision to quit overall, and only influenced my decision to pruvate my page. nothing else.
my messages are also disabled for a week, which was the best i could do. tiktok no longer allows you to turn your messages off entirely, so i sent a concerning messsage to my alt, reported it, and got my messages disablsed by proxy. ive also restricted my comments so that no one can comment on my videos, as i dont want to deal with people thinking im ignoring them when in reailty im not even on the platform.
so, whether this is your first time seeing me, or you came here from my video about having left tiktok... thank you for reading my explanation.
